Volunteerism At Canara Kannada Medium Primary School As A Contribution Towards Vidyanjali – An Extension Activity

June 6, 2024

For centuries, selfless service or Shramadaan, community service or a voluntary contribution towards community welfare, has been central to India’s social fabric and culture. Shramadaan is also related to dignity of labour. In alignment with the purpose of service, which is an important aspect of teaching and learning, Canara College has always encouraged shramadaan initiatives. One such volunteerism-driven extension activity was shramadaan at Canara Kannada Medium Primary School, Dongerkery, Mangaluru by16 NSS volunteers on June 01and 04, 2024, as a contribution towards the governmental initiative ‘Vidyanjali’.

The Ministry of Education, Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India has launched an online portal ‘Vidyanjali’ on September 07, 2021, which is a unique school volunteer management programme and offers an opportunity to volunteers from communities and organisations to connect with schools across the urban and rural geographies. Envisioned in NEP 2020, ‘Vidyanjali’ upholds the spirit of volunteerism and community participation in transforming the education system of India. The initiative aims to improve the quality of school education and strengthen infrastructure in schools by enabling individuals and communities to contribute towards the holistic development of students and improvement in school’s infrastructure. ‘Vidyanjali’ believes in the power of human kindness and the significant impact that volunteering can have on shaping a better world. It commends the spirit of volunteerism and encourages individuals to actively participate in social and economic development initiatives.

Our kind hearted volunteers dedicated their time and skill in digging up the school ground which was intended to be used later on as a practice ground for the Yakshagana artists and street play performers, and also as a playground for the school children. Thus, the NSS volunteers became a part of ‘Aap Bhi Bane Bhagidhar’- Adding Value through Human Resource Contribution. Their act of altruism has left a lasting impact on the community. The NSS Programme Officers, Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. and Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat coordinated this extension activity under the able guidance of the Administrator Dr. Deepthi Nayak.

By recognizing the value of volunteerism, and fostering a culture of giving back, we can contribute to a future where economic and social development are truly inclusive and leave no one behind.
