Workshop on Exploring Science and Heritage

The Science Association collaboration with Department of Basic science of Canara College organized a workshop on “Exploring Science and Heritage” for PU College students on September 3, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. in the Ratna S. Shenoy Memorial Seminar Hall.

The inaugural program was graced by Dr. Aradhana Marathe, distinguished alumna of Canara College and Faculty of Biochemistry, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, who was the Chief Guest for the occasion. The program was presided over by our beloved Principal, Dr. Premalatha V., who delivered the presidential address and shared an inspiring message with the students.

The proceedings began with a warm welcome speech and introduction of the Chief Guest by Ms. Janisha, Secretary of the Science Association and student of III B.Sc. In her address, the Chief Guest, Dr. Aradhana Marathe, emphasized the significance of basic sciences as the foundation of learning. She explained how a strong grounding in fundamentals is essential for pursuing research and higher education. She also encouraged students to read research papers, journals, and scientific studies, stressing that research not only enhances knowledge but also opens pathways for innovation and discovery.

In her presidential address, Dr. Premalatha V. highlighted the importance of science in shaping the future and referred to the Prime Minister’s encouragement to the younger generation to contribute to building a smart and progressive nation. The event concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. Raksha R.S., Joint Secretary of the Science Association and student of II B.Sc., who acknowledged the contributions of the dignitaries, faculty, and students. The Master of Ceremony was gracefully handled by Ms. Diya Rao of I B.Sc., who kept the proceedings engaging and well-coordinated.

The program was meticulously planned and successfully conducted under the guidance of the Science Association Convenor, Dr. Asha Kiran Pakkala, Head of the Science Program, along with Mrs. Soujanya D. Their efforts ensured the smooth and meaningful execution of the event. The program highlighted the importance of integrating scientific understanding with cultural heritage, offering students valuable insights and motivation to pursue research with strong academic foundations. The active participation of faculty, students, and guests made the workshop a memorable and impactful academic gathering.

The science demonstration program commenced at 10:00 a.m. with an inaugural function. Students were grouped into four teams and guided in sequence to the Botany, Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology laboratories to participate in hands-on experimental activities. The demonstrations were conducted by students of III B.Sc. and II B.Sc., along with the support of the Science Association. Each group followed a cyclic schedule, visiting the laboratories during both the morning and afternoon sessions. At the conclusion of the program, feedback forms were distributed to gather students’ responses, which reflected their active participation and enthusiasm for the activities. A total of 149 students and 5 lecturers from different colleges enthusiastically participated in this workshop. The workshop helped in fostering global competencies and human excellence by encouraging critical thinking, research orientation, and pursuit of higher education.
