Natural Language Processing using MS Azure

April 5, 2025

The Department of Computer Science and Applications at Canara College, Mangalore, organized a guest lecture titled “Natural Language Processing using MS Azure” on April 5, 2025. It was reported that the session was designed to provide students with a comprehensive introduction to Natural Language Processing (NLP) and to demonstrate how Microsoft Azure, a leading cloud computing platform, could be effectively used to perform a variety of NLP tasks.

During the lecture, students were introduced to key concepts in NLP, including text analysis, sentiment analysis, language detection, machine translation, and named entity recognition. It was mentioned that the session also explored how Azure Cognitive Services could be leveraged to perform these tasks using pre-built APIs and custom models, thereby making NLP solutions more accessible and scalable.

The resource person for the session, Dr. Bharathi Pilar, was described as a highly skilled expert in Natural Language Processing and cloud computing, with extensive experience in implementing NLP solutions using Microsoft Azure. Dr. Pilar was said to have provided valuable insights into both the theoretical and practical aspects of NLP, illustrating how businesses and developers could harness the power of Azure for real-world NLP applications.

Key highlights of the lecture included an overview of Azure’s NLP tools such as Text Analytics, LUIS (Language Understanding), Translator, and Speech Services.

Additionally, an interactive Q&A session was conducted to address students’ queries and encourage deeper engagement with AI and NLP.

The lecture aimed not only to equip students with foundational knowledge in NLP and cloud technologies but also to inspire them to explore these domains further for their academic projects and future careers in the expanding field of artificial intelligence. A total of 43 students were said to have benefitted from the program.
