WORKSHOP TITLED “ECO-GROW: SUSTAINABLE FARMING WITH HYDROPONICS & AQUAPONICS”

September 22, 2025

The Departments of Zoology and Botany jointly organized a workshop titled “Eco-Grow: Sustainable Farming with Hydroponics & Aquaponics” on September 22, 2025 at 11.00 am in Smt. Rathna S Shenoy Memorial Hall. The session was conducted by Mr. Glavin Thomas Rodrigues, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, St Aloysius (Deemed to be University).

During the workshop, Mr. Rodrigues explained the concepts of Hydroponics, Aquaponics, and Aeroponics, highlighting their advantages in terms of water conservation, higher yield, and minimal environmental impact. Instead of a practical demonstration in the hall, he showed a video illustrating how to set up an aquaponics system simply and cost-effectively. Students were impressed by the ideas and expressed interest in trying a similar model within the department.

He further discussed simple techniques to turn farming into a sustainable source of income, which included:

  • Soilless farming through Hydroponics and Aeroponics.
  • Efficient water usage methods for sustainable agriculture.
  • Cultivation of high-value crops like Saffron (Kesari) at home using Aeroponics.

To inspire the participants, Mr. Rodrigues also shared success stories of entrepreneurs who have excelled in Hydroponics, Aquaponics, and Aeroponics, motivating students to explore sustainability-linked entrepreneurial ventures.

The programme was efficiently coordinated by Mrs. Sushama C (HOD of Zoology), Ms. Madhushree (HOD of Botany), and Mrs. Pushpanjali S (Assistant Professor, Zoology & Botany). A total of 37 students actively participated in the workshop.
