Programme on Environmental Awareness,Conservation and Green Economy

The Nature Club and NSS unit of our college has arranged a programme on “Environmental awareness , Conservation and Green Economy” on 22nd July 2012.Shri Deepalan, a Naturalist from Kochi working for Mahindra, spreading awareness on Environment and Conservation to the schools and colleges by cycling from Kochi to Goa, Presented a seminar on Green Economy through his PowerPoint presentation.

He stated that “Green Economy is an economic environment that achieves low carbon emissions,resource efficiency  there by reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities that results in improved human well being and social equity. The Green Economy initiative was launched late in 2008. It consists of several components whose collective overall objective is to provide the analysis and policy support for investing in green sectors and  greening environmental unfreindly sectors.He also stressed that everyone can support and contribute their own to develop Green Economy by sending messages ,spreading awareness on Environment and Conservation through different sectors :

1. Reducing one’s impact by seeking out low – impact construction  and landscaping firms.

2.By promoting sustainable finishing practices.

3.By sustainable managed forests that continue to support communities and eco systems with out damaging environment and climate.

4.By walking for short distances,sharing vehicles,using bicycles,carpooling and public transport which reduce environmental impacts and economic costs while strengthening community.

5.By using water and water resources wisely.

6.By supporting and involving one to develop local,organic,sustainable and environmental friendly agricultural methods.

7.By supporting the development of clean,renewable non conventional energy which ensure energy conservation and efficiency.

8.By adopting ecotourism,exploring local places,demanding local food and having the experience of tradition.

9.By purchasing less and taking only less,thereby reducing waste.Recycling appropriate materials and composting food waste reduces the demand on our natural resources to produce more materials.

10.By taxing industries, so that polluting industry has to pay the society for the damage it has caused.

At the end he conducted quiz programme for students and gave prizes to the winners.

The president of the function,Principal of our college , Prof Satish Bhat in his welcome speech said everyone’s contribution is very important in spreading awareness on Environment and Conservation.Dr.M.S Joshi Kumble,H.O.D of Botany and NSS Programme officer proposed the Vote of Thanks. H.O.D of Zoology ,Mrs Sushama, and lecturer in Botany Mrs. Pushpanjali were present.
