“Crystal Model Making” activity

March 20, 2025

The Department of Chemistry organized a Solid Crystal Model Making activity for I BSc students as part of their practical approach to understanding the Solid State chapter in their curriculum. The event aimed to provide students with hands-on experience in constructing models of various crystal types, allowing them to better visualize and comprehend the concepts related to crystal structures and molecular orientation.

I BSc PCM and BZC students were divided into groups of 6-7 members each. Each group was assigned a specific type of crystal structure to model, which included various types of crystalline arrangements such as Simple Cubic, Body-Centred Cubic (BCC), Face-Centred Cubic (FCC), Hexagonal Close-Packed (HCP) etc., The idea was to construct the crystal lattices and show the proper orientation of molecules, ensuring they understood the spatial arrangement and packing efficiency in solid crystals. A total of 47 students participated, and their engagement in the activity showed a significant improvement in their understanding of the solid-state concepts.
