Determination of Contaminants in Water by Water Analysis Activity

November 16, 2024

To promote awareness about water quality and its impact on health and the environment, the Department of Chemistry organized a water analysis activity for the Chemistry Open Elective students on 3 different days in different batches on November 7, 11, and 16, 2024. The 37 students from the B.Com and BBA streams participated in a water analysis programme aimed at evaluating the quality of water from various sources in and around Mangalore. The students were divided into six teams and brought water samples from rivers, wells, taps, and other local sources.

In the laboratory, the students performed various experiments to determine the acidity, alkalinity, and pH levels of the water samples. The pH levels were measured using pH paper and universal indicators. They also conducted titration experiments to observe the purity and chemical properties of the water. The students actively engaged in the activity and enjoyed observing the colour changes during titration and while using universal indicators. For many, this was their first exposure to laboratory techniques, and they found the experience educational and enjoyable. All the students submitted the report of the analysis they conducted for various water sources.

The experiments revealed variations in the acidity, alkalinity, and purity levels of water from different sources. This provided valuable insights into the quality and safety of water in their respective areas. The activity was successful in blending theoretical knowledge with practical application and raised awareness about the importance of maintaining water quality. Mrs. Roopashri K P, Assistant Professor in Chemistry, guided the students to conduct these experiments in the laboratory.
