Grafting Workshop On Account of Gandhi & Shasthri Jayanthi

The inauguration of the “Nadamavu grafting workshop” took place in the college hall on October 02,2023, organized through collaboration between Canara College Department of Commerce and Student Welfare Council, the Department of Horticulture Mangalore, Rotary Club Metro Mangalore, Nadamavu, and Halasu Samraksha Balag Sullia. This event coincided with Gandhi Jayanti and Lal Bahudur Shastri’s jayanthi.


The chief guest for the event was Sri K. Praveen, the Senior Assistant Director of the Department of Horticulture, Mangalore Taluk. He emphasized the importance of biodiversity conservation and the need for conscious efforts to protect the native species. He highlighted the existence of gene banks developed by government and related departments, which encouraged the farmers and citizens to join their hands with these organizations to receive training in transplanting, an initiative that would attract young individuals interested in preserving old tree species.

Mr. Jayaram Mundolimoole, the founder of Namami Balaga Sullia, expressed the project’s goal to transplant century-old trees and nurture them into six-foot-tall plants through cloning, making them accessible to the public. The event was presided over by Sri M. Ranganath Bhat, Hon. Secretary, C.H.S Association. Mrs. Rajani R Bhat, President of Rotary Club Metro, inaugurated the programme. Other notable attendees included Dr. Premalatha V., Principal, Canara College, Dr. Deepti Nayak, Administrator, Canara College, Mr. Basti Purushottama Shenoy, Governing Body Member, CHS Association, Mr. Jagadish K.P., and office bearers from the Rotary Club, Mrs.Chaaya Kamath and Mrs. Suraksha Kini, as well as various individuals who are interested in agriculture. The workshop was conducted by Sri. Shyam Bhat Kalmadka, Guttigaru, and Sri Jagadish Paramale, who has been providing transplanting training for approximately 26 years. Mrs. Dejamma A., the Program Coordinator, HOD Commerce & Management extended a warm welcome to the attendees, and Mrs. Smitha M., Student Welfare Mentor florally welcomed the resource persons and the programme was hosted by Mrs. Seema Prabhu S. A total of 33 Can-cabinet Student Welfare Council members were a part of this initiative along with 56 other participants.
