The commitment and dedication of the Institution is evidenced by the prodigious positions occupied by the prominent alumni in the society is noteworthy. The magnanimous contributions made by the alumni are highly commendable. It reflects the culture of ‘Service to Society’ which is inculcated in the Canarites that comes back in the form of alumni contribution. True to its philosophy, the institute imparts ‘Quality Education at Affordable Cost’ to all, even for economically less privileged. I express my heartfelt reverence and gratitude to all my teachers on this momentous occasion. It is also a matter of pride, privilege and honor to be serving my Alma-mater which has grown from a seed into a full-fledged tree. With immense pride, I whole-heartedly owe the credit of my success to my Alma-mater.”

Presidential Address

Remembering the Almighty God and offering his salutations at the lotus feet of the sublime soul, Sri Ammembal Subba Rao Pai, Sri Basti Purushotham Shenoy, Member of the Governing Council, Canara High School Association, Mangaluru, in his Presidential Address, reminisced the invaluable contributions of Late Sri Ullal Gopalkrishna Nayak who was instrumental in the establishing of new buildings for the three High Schools, Junior College and the Canara College.”

Highlighting the importance of teachers, he quoted Smt. Sudha Murthy, “When a doctor makes a mistake, a person goes six feet below the ground. When a judge makes a mistake, a person is hung six feet above the ground. But when a teacher makes a mistake, the entire batch of students is destroyed. Don’t ever look down on teachers. Thus, a teacher is the most integral and vital part of any educational institution. They are the ones who build the repute of an institute brick by brick.” Further, lauding the immeasurable contributions of the numerous alumni, he added, “The name and fame of CANARA is not just because of its quality, but also because of and more so because of its illustrious alumni. The prominent ones being Sri Ullal Srinivas Mallya who built KREC, the Ullal Bridge, All India Radio Station in Mangaluru, Mangaluru Airport, among others; and presently, Sri D. Vedavyas Kamath, who as an M.L.A. is rendering yeoman service to people of Mangaluru City, South Constituency.

Calling upon the students present on the occasion, he said “Students should lead an ethical and moral life and thus become sound pillars of the society.” Furthermore, while appreciating the unique programme organized by the Institute over the years – “SRUJANA”, he recollected how the participating NSS Volunteers from different colleges expressed their joy, gratitude and appreciation for the impeccably organized one-day University Level NSS Fest. Afterall, goodness spreads its fragrance.

Besides, he also shared with the gathering how NAAC Peer Team visit to the adopted village Kodman in Bantwal Taluk enabled the Institute garner ‘A’ grade with rich commendations for its social commitment and towards undertaking wide-range of need-based outreach initiatives there for over three decades. “The assiduous work of the NSS Units at the adopted village Kodman touched the heart of the esteemed Peer Team Members who generously lauded the ‘Shramadana’ of our NSS Volunteers whose significant contributions helped in the development of the village. This meaningful interaction with the esteemed Peer Team Members will ever be the most memorable and the closest to my heart.”

Keynote Address

The formal inaugural ceremony was followed by meaningful keynote address by Prof. Dr. Raveendranath Nayak, Visiting Professor, Goa Business School, Goa University, Panjim; Former Director, Manipal Institute of Management, Manipal, on the topic -“Leading the way for Institutional Effectiveness – A TQM Approach.”

“Fruitfully reaching the completion of its 50th year in the field of education is a great feat in itself and an inspiration to many in this field. Now, the challenge ahead of it is to run this private aided college with its given resources in its best possible way. The biggest challenge that a reputed institution faces in this modern competitive world is how to meet the hyper expectations of students, parents among other stakeholders.”

“With the advent of internet, knowledge is at your fingertips, and, the data is everywhere and easily accessible. Success of online classes has just opened up the floodgates of new competition from new colleges which have the state-of-the-art facilities and technologies to offer to their aspirants making them the preferred choice for admission-seekers. In the near future, we all would see more of such stiff competition.”

“Students and parents alike expect more from colleges. They want not just education being imparted but also expect assured jobs with handsome salary. This being true for degree and engineering colleges. The new age is driven by the perception that good colleges are those with sound employment reputation and the salary the company offers is the yardstick of the colleges’ credentials.”

“Now, the next challenge that an institution would be facing is making their graduates ‘Job-ready’. Unlike, in the yester years where the employer used to train his fresh trainee, now this responsibility has been gradually passed on to the colleges to prepare their students ‘Job-ready’.”

Further while sharing some of the constructive suggestions on the above demanding concerns he said – “The institutes to remain relevant and sustain, shall strive to live up to the expectations of the future generations. Colleges need to be mindful that if they do not update themselves according to the changing times, they would be left behind in the competition. Hence, how to take this challenge? Colleges can think to run in parallel structure. Students in the morning hours can be imparted curriculum knowledge and later in the day be imparted with skill-based knowledge through hands-on education.”

Legacy institutions like ‘CANARA’ need to shed its comfort zone and think big. Make jugad by gathering more support from alumni in terms of knowledge dissemination and financial contribution.”

Panel Discussion with Open Q & A

The Keynote address was followed by an interesting Panel Discussion on the topic “Stakeholders Expectations and Future of Institutional Effectiveness.”The panel had the following esteemed members:

This was followed by open question and answer session. In response to the views expressed and discussions held by the panelists, stakeholder-wise specific concerns were raised which were convincingly justified by the esteemed panelists. The session was effectively moderated by Sri CA M. Vaman Kamath who concluded the session with the closing remarks.

In his concluding note he said – “Strategic planning and assessment are the key parts to the institutional effectiveness process. To measure institutional effectiveness, it is important to understand and critically evaluate the various dimensions of success, such as productivity, quality, resource efficiency, and stakeholders’ satisfaction, and, determine how effectively programmes and services are contributing to the institutional mission, vision, values, strategic goals and community needs. This retreat is therefore an effort made to think and ponder upon these concerns with promising strategies to charter with.”

Golden Jubilee Memorial Spiritual Discourse

The Day-3 programme marked its propitious start with a Golden Jubilee Memorial Spiritual Discourse on the theme “Be the Best Version of You to Live Life to the Fullest” delivered by His Holiness Sri Swami Vivekachaithanyananda, Adhyaksha, Ramakrishna Tapovan, Polali, Bantwal.

Offering prayers and salutations to the Holy Trio, Poojya Swamiji in his enlightening discourse said – “From the womb to tomb is a journey of the soul to understand the ultimate truth, and this truth is understood differently by different people.” Quoting Swami Vivekananda’s meaning of education, “Education is the manifestation of the perfection within man,” Swamiji elucidated on ‘maya’ that veils the infinite source of knowledge that is within us. This light of knowledge is covered by ignorance or maya and we must all strive to unfold it and find the path to rediscover the light within. In this search, Gurus are the torch bearers who guide their disciples.

The cause of many increasing crimes and atrocities in the society is the drastic depletion in moral values. The true purpose of education, therefore, must be to inculcate moral values in children right from their tender age. Each one of us, students, teachers, professionals must be well-acquainted with the ‘Swadharma’. One must not deviate from one’s ‘Swadharma’, that is, duties and responsibilities, only then one can see a healthy society.

Further, speaking about the power of concentration, he drew an analogy between the tranquil mind and the placid and serene pond. Just as the still water of pond shows ripples when a small pebble is cast into it, similarly a calm and composed mind gets disturbed by just one stray thought. Just like the ripples, one thought triggers infinite thoughts.

Highlighting the teachings of Buddha, Poojya Swamiji said that the key to true happiness is annihilating the ‘I’ within, which is nothing but the big fat unsatiable ‘Ego’. Sri Swamiji also pointed out that “Desire is the root cause of all sorrows. We born with a pure soul, are the ocean of peace and bliss, but under the influence of maya, in vain search externally for what we already possess.”

His Holiness Swamiji earnestly urged that we must shun all kinds of addiction, shake-up all illusion and live like human beings. Without moral values we lead a life like an animal. Just like an animal we are born, we procreate, share feelings and joy, and meet our end. It’s rare to get this human form and when the human life is devoid of moral values, the true purpose of life is not understood. Therefore, moral values play a very vital role in the upliftment of the self and the betterment of society at large.

Poojya Swamiji also emphasized that spirituality can help people to develop a more hopeful outlook on life. Spirituality makes a person internally empowered and helps to keep on moving unwaveringly. Good conduct, virtue, self-discipline, respect, dignity, etc. are such qualities that can usher happiness in our life. Thus, one must always endeavor to “Be the Best Version of You to Live Life to the Fullest.”

On the arrival of Poojya Swamiji to the venue, His Holiness was accorded a reverential reception by the Correspondent and the Manager accompanied by the Principal, Administrator, Staff and Student Leaders. The programme began with the invocation followed by the rendition of National Song rendered by the College Prayer Team. The Principal Dr. Premalatha V. delivered the welcome address.
