The Department of Commerce, in association with the Pilikula Development Authority,Mangaluru organized an outreach programme titled “Learning Beyond Walls – Paddy Harvesting and Sustainable Agriculture Field Training” on December 03, 2025, at Pilikula Guttu House, Moodushedde, Mangaluru. Dr. Aruna Kumar Shetty, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Dakshina Kannada, addressed the gathering and emphasized the importance of connecting field-based learning with academic education, while highlighting the role of sustainable farming in strengthening food security and public health. Shri Ramakrishna Marate, Scientific Officer, Botany Division, Pilikula, provided expert guidance during the field sessions and explained the relevance of traditional cultivation practices and eco-friendly agricultural methods. He motivated the students to value the efforts of local farmers and understand the ecological significance of farming systems.
A total of 21 students and 4 staff members actively participated in the programme. The students gained valuable hands-on experience by harvesting paddy from one of the fields, where they enthusiastically took part in every stage of the activity. This practical exposure helped them understand agricultural techniques beyond the classroom and appreciate the significance of both traditional and sustainable farming practices. Through active engagement in the field, they also learned how sustainable agriculture contributes to healthy lifestyles, community well-being, and national development by encouraging responsible and balanced dietary habits.
Overall, the programme greatly enriched the students’ understanding of sustainable agriculture, deepened their respect for farming communities, and offered meaningful experiential learning that effectively linked classroom knowledge with real-world application.
