A BEACH CLEAN UP ACTIVITY AT TANNIRBHAVI BEACH

On October 06, 2024, at Tannirbhavi Beach, First Year NSS Volunteers of Canara College, Mangaluru, in association with Mangalore Surf Club conducted “Swachha Sagar”- A Beach Cleanup Activity. The beach cleanup drive began at 7:00 A.M. with an initial briefing by the team leads and members of the Mangalore Surf Club. Volunteers were divided into groups and provided with gloves, collection bags, and necessary safety instructions. The area cleaned covered a significant stretch of Tannirbavi Beach. The collected waste was later segregated and disposed of appropriately with the guidance of the surf club and local municipal authorities.

This drive started by picking up plastic waste, glass bottles etc., at Tannirbhavi Beach. Large number of plastic materials and wastage were collected by the volunteers, thus making the beach area clean and neat. The volunteers created awareness about proper disposal of plastic waste to the shop keepers and the residents of the area. This drive was held to create a sense of responsibility and consciousness among the volunteers and public on appropriate disposal of waste and its effects on our ecosystem.

The “Swachha Sagar” beach cleanup activity was a significant step toward creating a cleaner and healthier coastline. It not only contributed to the beautification of Tannirbavi Beach but also served as a meaningful learning experience for the NSS volunteers. The event successfully reinforced the values of environmental responsibility and community involvement among the youth.

Despite the rains, altogether 89 NSS volunteers actively participated in this drive. NSS Programme Officers Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat, and Mrs. Sushama C. and Assistant NSS Programme Officer Mrs. Laxmi Hegde guided the volunteers. The activity concluded with the distribution of healthy refreshments to all the participants.
