FIELD VISIT TO SWARNA GUTTU MANE, PILIKULA

October 29, 2025

The Tulu Sangha of Canara College, Mangaluru, organized a one-day field visit to Swarna Guttu Mane at Pilikula Heritage Village on 29 October 2025. The visit was coordinated by Mrs. Vani U. S and Ms. Maneesha D, conveners of the Tulu Sangha. The objective of the one-day programme was to provide students with hands-on exposure to the traditional crafts, architecture, and lifestyle of Tulunadu, fostering an appreciation for local heritage and indigenous skills.

During the visit, students explored Swarna Guttu Mane, a heritage house that showcases the traditional Tulu-style architecture characterized by intricate wooden carvings, sloping roofs, and spacious courtyards. They also visited different sections of the Tulu Heritage Village, which demonstrated various rural crafts such as pottery, weaving, oil extraction and carpentry—each reflecting the self-sustained living practices of ancient Tulunadu. Students observed artisans at work, gaining valuable insights into the techniques, tools, and cultural symbolism behind these crafts.

The conveners guided the students throughout the visit, explaining how each traditional occupation contributed to the cultural and economic life of the region. The interactive discussions helped students relate the importance of traditional craftsmanship to sustainable development and cultural preservation in the modern world.

The one-day programme provided a meaningful learning experience that combined cultural appreciation, creativity, and historical understanding. It encouraged students to value and preserve the artistic legacy of Coastal Karnataka. A total of 39 students  participated in this field visit.
