The Cell for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (CASST) organized a Workshop on “Fundamentals of Research Thinking” on October 9, 2025. The workshop aimed to introduce students to the essential concepts of research thinking and its importance in academic and professional development. It provided participants with an understanding of how to think critically, identify research problems, and apply research perspectives across disciplines. The sessions encouraged students to explore innovative ideas and adopt an analytical approach to learning and discovery.
The inaugural programme commenced at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer song by Ms. Srusti and Ms. Annapoorna, invoking divine blessings for the event. This was followed by a welcome address and introduction of the resource person by Ms. Sharanya T. S., III B.Sc., Student Convener, CASST. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp marked the formal beginning of the workshop. The Presidential Address was delivered by Dr. Premalatha V., Principal, Canara College, who emphasized the importance of developing research skills and a spirit of inquiry among students.
The resource person, Mr. Vishal Nayak K, Assistant Professor (Stage III), Department of Media Studies, St. Aloysius College (Deemed-to-be University), Mangaluru, and alumnus of the B.Sc. batch 1998–2001, then took over the sessions.
The first session, titled “Introduction to Research Thinking,” focused on the fundamental aspects of research, including its purpose, significance, problem identification, and various types of research. Mr. Vishal Nayak K explained the systematic process of research and highlighted the importance of developing a critical and analytical mindset. He encouraged participants to adopt a curiosity-driven approach to learning and to cultivate the habit of thinking like researchers.
The second session, titled “Application and Interdisciplinary Perspectives,” explored how research thinking can be applied beyond academic boundaries and integrated into real-world situations. Mr. Nayak K emphasized the value of interdisciplinary thinking and discussed the role of research in everyday life. He also addressed effective communication strategies across different platforms, the concept of content atomization, and the importance of research perspectives in shaping future careers. The session concluded with valuable insights on applying research-oriented thinking in academic and professional contexts.
The workshop concluded. with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Sania, III B.Sc., Student Convener, CASST, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, principal, faculty, and students for their support and participation. A total of 67 students participated in this workshop. The programme was organized under the guidance of the Conveners of CASST, Mrs. Pratima V. Baliga and Mrs. Soujanya D., along with the student conveners Ms. Sania and Ms. Sharanya T. S. The activity instilled ethical research values, integrity, and a sense of social responsibility among students in their academic and professional pursuits.
