Workshop on “Creating Safe Spaces”: A Step towards Empowerment of Women through Law

The Anti-Sexual Harassment Cell organized a workshop titled “Creating Safe Spaces: A Step towards Empowerment of Women through Law.” The event was held in the Seminar Hall on June 07,2024 and was attended by over 80 students and three faculty members. The primary objective of the workshop was to raise awareness about legal provisions related to sexual harassment and empower women by educating them on how to utilize these laws effectively.

The workshop commenced with a keynote address by Dr. Annapoorna Shet, Asst. Professor, SDM Law College, Mangaluru. She emphasized the importance of understanding and utilizing the legal provisions available to combat sexual harassment. She highlighted key legislation such as the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013, and the role of Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) in ensuring justice and safety.

The workshop was focused on defining sexual harassment, its various forms, and its impact on victims. She provided real-life examples and case studies to illustrate the pervasive nature of harassment in different settings, including workplaces, educational institutions, and public spaces. She explained the procedures for filing complaints, the role of ICCs, and the protections offered under the law, and she also discussed landmark judgments that have shaped the legal landscape regarding sexual harassment in India.

The interactive session facilitated practical strategies for creating and maintaining safe spaces. Participants engaged in group activities and discussions to identify potential risks and develop comprehensive plans to foster safe environments. She highlighted the significance of awareness and proactive measures in empowering women. She shared success stories of women who have effectively used the law to combat harassment and achieve justice. The workshop concluded with an introduction to various support services available for victims of harassment, including counseling and legal aid. The workshop was coordinated by Mrs.Rithika Das Assistant Professor Dept of English and Mrs.Vijetha Bhat PG Coordinator, MCA Department.
