VIVEKA SAMVAADA: AN EVENING WITH MR. VIVEK SHANBHAG

July 25, 2023

Association of English Teachers(AET) in association the Department of English, Canara College, Mangaluru organized a unique interactive program “Viveka Samvaada: An Evening with Mr. Vivek Shanbhag” on July 25, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. at the College Seminar Hall.

Renowned writer Mr. Vivek Shanbhag, known for his short stories, novels, and plays, was the distinguished guest. His translated novel “Ghachar Ghochar” is part of Mangalore University’s BBA fourth-semester curriculum, leading to his participation in an interactive dialogue. The session, fulfilling Mr. Shanbhag’s wish, allowed for a two-way exchange rather than a one-sided talk. The bilingual setting enabled questions in both English and Kannada, covering various subjects like “Ghachar Ghochar,” literature in general, creative writing, the writer’s thought process, and the writing journey.

During an engaging discussion, Mr. Vivek Shanbhag responded to questions about his novel “Ghachar Ghochar.” He introduced the “Iceberg Effect” used by writers, comparing it to an iceberg where only a fraction is visible above water, symbolizing that stories hold hidden depths. He quoted Ernest Hemingway’s “Theory of Omission” to emphasize the appeal of revealing less.

Regarding translation into Indian languages, he noted both the ease and complexity due to shared cultural elements. He explained that each language has its unique character, sometimes causing loss in meaning during translation.

For aspiring writers, he stressed the importance of reading extensively to broaden perspective and improve writing. The program saw enthusiastic participation from educators, literature enthusiasts, and students, providing insight into the writer’s thoughts. The dialogue was vibrant, fruitful, and memorable. A total of 70 participants enthusiastically took part in the program.

Dr. Premalatha V., the Principal of our College, presided over the program, while Mr. Sojan K. George, an Associate Professor at Dr. GSGWFGC, took on the role of the session’s Moderator. Dr. Victor Vaz E., the President of AET, warmly welcomed and introduced the guest to the gathering. Dr. Padmaja Shetty, Vice President of AET, expressed gratitude in the vote of thanks. Mrs. Rithika S. Das, Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Canara College, coordinated the program, with assistance from Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat, Lecturer in the Department of English at Canara College. Mrs. Dejamma A., Head of the Department of Commerce and Management at Canara College, and Mr. Hardik P.
