Inauguration of Golden Jubilee Year-long Celebrations- CCM@50

July 21, 2022

Completion of five fruitful decades is a major landmark and a significant milestone in the odyssey of any educational institution. The year 2023 earmarks the Golden Jubilee year of the esteemed existence if our institute. A jubilee of an institution is an important event that gives us an opportunity to look backwards on the distance travelled and forward to the journey that lies ahead and has to be planed. Casting a glance over the years that have gone by, we cannot but thank Almighty God for the bounteous grace and blessings showered upon the institution. We do not celebrate the existence of the building but the people who have made it come alive. It is a time to be grateful for the students who have passed through the portals of this temple, for the enlightenment and hope that it has brought into the thousands of youthful lives.

It is with these sentiments of contentment, joy and gratitude, the Canara College, Mangaluru marked the commemoration of the inauguration of Golden Jubilee Year-long Celebrations on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at 4:00 P.M. in T. V. Raman Pai Convention Centre, Kodialbail, Mangaluru. The students dressed in ethnic wear accorded a gracious reception and a hospitable welcome to the Guests, Dignitaries and Invitees.

Opening Remarks and Golden Jubilee Toast

Prof. Anila, Alumna, and Principal, Canara Evening College, Mangaluru, in opening remarks while proposing the Golden Jubilee Toast said –“The mammoth growth of Canara College has not happened because of sheer chance. The molding and transforming of this institution into an institution of reckoning has been because of the attempt of not only the people who are at the helm of the affairs but also of all the stakeholders who are associated with the institution. Canara College over the years has attracted very talented students from the beginning. The very fact that over a period of 49 years of its illustrious existence, 121 students are the rank holders makes it evident and it’s not a small achievement which has happened due to the dedicated and committed efforts of the faculty members of the institute. Adding to that, Canara College has gone beyond the community it belongs to accommodate anyone and everyone who deserved to be a part of it. In addition to that, Canara College has provided academic support to many prominent entities, be it the affiliating University, ICAI and the like. More importantly, the attachment that the former students have had and that have continued to have with their Alma mater has contributed to its progressive growth. The success of Canara College has unfolded in many ways and at many levels. From having one batch of students per stream to multiple batches of students, there has been a great achievement. From having only a under graduate studies to a post graduate studies is again a great step ahead. From having 600 students in strength to a whopping nearly 1,500 currently is a great leap ahead. And to top it all, from having NAAC Accreditation of ‘B’ Grade to ‘A’ Grade this year in its Fourth Cycle is a gallop.

50th year is a significant year in the life of any institution for that matter. 49 years of esteemed existence, itself is not a small feat, but there is so much more that has to be achieved. Probably, we need to be little more creative, a little more aggressive in trying to accomplish more. We need to move ahead beyond. The blocks, the hurdles that have been faced may have to be turned into energizing spring boards to convert them into new ideas and new achievements. Canara College would be aspiring to reach pinnacle of success in the coming years. I appeal to all those who are associated or are in touch with this amazing institution, to come together to join hands to take Canara and make it greater Canara. May we all be fired with enthusiasm to complete our work and reach our goals. If that is done, there will be no stopping Canara College from reaching its greater heights. No stopping Canara College from moving to its future that is shiny and bright and glittering in its fullest glory.

Inaugural Address

The inaugurator Prof. Dr. P. Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Mangalore University, Mangalagangothri, in his inaugural address said – “I am really fortunate enough to be a part of this very meaningful and memorable occasion of marking the inauguration of Golden Jubilee Year-long Celebrations of this great institution. It’s neither a child’s play nor a Sunday gardening to complete successfully 50 long years and aiming towards to celebrate the Shatamanotsava – the Centenary. So, in the fitness of things, this institution is commemorating its Golden Jubilee while the nation is celebrating its Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. Indeed a major milestone to make our nation proud”.

“Another important milestone is we have started implementing the National Education Policy 2020 in a very meaningful and effective manner from the academic year 2021-22. This NEP 2020 is holding brilliant promises and daring proposals to transform the entire landscape of Indian education right from Pre-KG to Post Graduation and beyond. And Canara College and its Governing Council – the Management are totally committed to implement NEP 2020 in both letter and spirit. Because the punch line of NEP 2020 is “Nation First and Character Must”.

“In addition to that, the biggest challenge or the concern before the institutions offering higher education in India is how to make things happen. During the last 50 years, Canara College has made its own impression. Over the years it has successfully enhanced the brand equity of this great institution, because we should acknowledge the contributions of the teachers, the support staff, the alumni and the people of goodwill of Mangaluru and this district and neighborhood to make this institution with a difference. Canara College, I understand is an institution with a difference. To bear sufficient testimony to prove this, you have got an ‘A’ Grade Accreditation from NAAC. It’s not that easy now. Because I have been travelling all over the India as the Chairman of this Peer Team. So you could succeed”.

“As Shiv Khera in his book, rightly said, Great institutions will not do different things but they do things differently. That is what Canara College is totally committed to this kind of philosophy. Doing things differently and doing different things both are combined in this institution. Taking clue from this philosophy, we know house is only a piece of architecture. But home is different. Home is full of love, affection, warmth and hospitality. Similarly, a group is merely a collection of people but a team is qualified with a team spirit, a sense of togetherness, a kind of positive synergy. Such a team spirit, team working and team building is evident here at this great institution. Similarly a country is noted by the contour lines on the geographical map. But a nation is much more than that i.e. the national will and patriotism. Similarly, an organization is not just a box on the organizational chart. Institution means the people occupying all those boxes in a chart who make all the difference. Ultimately, people keep the place and set the progress of any organization. They are there to convert an organization into an institution, a performance oriented institution which is a vibrant one”.

“Here we should remember the dedicated and committed faculty members. To vote save the fact, my daughter was the alumni of this institution who studied from III Standard to B.Com., and later pursued her Chartered Accountancy and the show goes on. And she tells me, Daddy, Canara College is different in its own right. Because their philosophy, processes, policies, programmes and practices are entirely different. Therefore, Canara College stands out in the crowd. During COVID-19 also, the Canara College was able to tide over the contingencies in a highly befitting manner. Because, as the Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University, I know from very close the style of functioning, the academic commitment, the academic governance and how well they keep in tune with the annual academic calendar and in what way they have been cooperating with the Mangalore University in the conduct of various academic and also extra-curricular activities”.

“Similarly, the support staff who is highly understanding and cooperative. They perform everything with a sense purpose, pride and direction considering it as Our College. Because is involvement is something, commitment is much more than involvement. The support staff is the real backbone of any institution”.

“The vibrant Alumni Association here at Canara College who understands the concerns, apprehensions and challenges. They are ready to help you in multifarious ways. They extend their support in a number of ways. Because, this institution has created that kind of culture in them. Give back to the society. Because the real happiness lies in giving rather than in receiving which is taught and practiced in this institution as endorsed my own daughter”.

“The Management of this institution is highly enlightened. It is strongly committed to the philosophy of democratic, participative, inclusive and consultative management approach which is also the need of the hour today. Continuing the mantle forward, it has to contribute to the society, it has to shape and reshape the fortunes of young hearts and minds by being universally compassionate. Such is the lesson taught in Canara College. I understand that Canara College is progressing over the past 49 years, and it will complete its centenary without much difficulty in a very befitting manner through a simple philosophy of remaining every time one step ahead. It is the hallmark of this institution which is involved in continuous learning, improvement and development (CLID)”.

“The Rashtriya Uchattar Shiskhan and now the NEP 2020 is talking and firmly focusing on the Institutional Development Plan encompassing the sustainability issues and digital perspectives; and, am glad to witness the release of Institutional Strategic / Perspective Plan 2022-2027. Moreover, the commemorative Golden theme of the institution also highlights on study the past, understand the present and project the future. I appreciate and laud the committed and dedicated efforts of the IQAC which has enabled the institute to obtain ‘A’ Grade under the revised accreditation framework of NAAC. It is not the question of passing the buck to somebody else; it is not a mutual blame game. But here, everyone should be committed and the IQAC will have to play a decisive role. Hence, I congratulate the efforts of IQAC in this institution. Because they have contributed their blood certain tears and the Management has already recognized their contributions”.

“The students of Canara College are no exception to appreciations. The NEP 2020 today speaks about students learning experiences, feedback and learning outcomes. Canara College has been able to create, sustain and maintain such an ambience for effective learning and thereby create disciplined and well-cultured students. The institution has made it a point to educate and train the students to understand the difference between survival and living. Courage to fail, confidence to win, and confession to succeed or a kind of conviction to succeed are keys to lead one’s life gracefully and righteously”.

“Thus, Canara College rightly deserves to celebrate its Golden Jubilee year-long celebrations. I, on behalf of the Mangalore University congratulate and extend my warmest greetings for a memorable golden era and beyond”.

Address by the Chief Guest

The Chief Guest Sri CA K. Ullas Kamath, Coach – Family managed business, Former Joint Managing Director, Jyothy Labs Limited, Bengaluru, in his address said “It’s truly a great honor personally for me to be a part of this Inauguration of Golden Jubilee year-long celebrations. Canara College doesn’t need any introduction. Canara College and Mangaluru city is synonymous with education. The institution is as good as its students, past students, as good as its past teachers and the present teachers.

The teacher is person who teaches the person who comes lasting class in a best way and the person who come first in class in the least way and in forty students he or she identifies where her teaching has to be and most of the times that teach in a way in which the last bencher will understand very clearly and the first benchers anyway they know because they see the teacher from close angle. So the life is all about “Guru Shishya Parampara”. We have seen that for many years. Before we start writing, there were teachers and everything was through the memory.

In today’s world, education, job, getting a job, experience, practical… there is lot of disconnect. And the new NEP 2020 is all about. The International MNCs are also run by Indian people. That is the way how Indian education is. As the Commissioner of Police Sri N. Shashi Kumar rightly said that it is due to the quality of educational institutions, the quality of teachers and students, the Mangaluru is undoubtedly regarded as the Kashi for all purposes in education. There is real need to go little way beyond from the educational institutions and connect with the practical world. He called upon the students to read at least three newspapers. The students must be exposed to hands-on working on the Projects with the local industries. Spirituality is a part of life and a way of life. At the end of the day, one must be an asset to the society and not otherwise. We should be job creators and not the job seekers. Teachers should spend little extra time with the students on grooming them while they are releasing them to the job market, making them employable and industry ready. People should have peace of mind, good health and optimistic approach and doing best in all that you do. Making them students graduate with fantastic marks is 50% done. What we need is a moral character and good commitment from them”.

Canara College has contributed immensely in the field of education and it is worthwhile to remember the visionary Founder Late Sri Ammembal Subba Rao Pai. This is the time for us when we transition ahead from Golden Jubilee to Diamond, to Platinum to Centenary and beyond. I will be more than happy to do a bit from my end for anything that is related to the field of entrepreneurship, commerce and industry.

Address by the Alumni Guest of Honor

Alumni Guest of Honor Sri Manohar Prasad, Former Assistant Editor, Udayavani – National Daily, Mangaluru, in his message said “The legacy of CANARA Institutions is spellbound. I owe my respects and regards to my Alma mater for transforming and making me into what I am today. While I reminisce my golden days and golden memories associated with my Alma mater, I fondly remember my then Principal Prof. G. K. Shenoy who identified in me the creative writing skills and encouraged thereon. The three valuable years spent here at this Institute has shaped my personality, my career and my life. It developed in me the fine qualities of a journalist”.

Address by the Alumni Guest of Honor

Alumni Guest of Honor Sri D. Vedavyas Kamath, MLA, Mangaluru City South Constituency, in his message said “It is truly a matter of delight and pride, while the nation commemorates its Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, my Alma mater is stepping into its Golden Jubilee year of memorable existence. One who has not studied the history can never create a history. Hence, it very much significant to learn the history and its experiences. CANARA is not just an institution that provides education. But teaches life, instills values, infuses the virtues of righteousness and nurtures the culture in its learners. The institution has instilled the virtues of righteousness and has taught the lessons of life in innumerable students who have passed from the portals of this temple of learning. And, with utmost sense of pride and contentment, I feel fortunate to be one among them. And today, I feel fulfilling of having had the opportunity to serve the people of my city as a MLA. It is promising to see the institution growing by leaps and bounces. The dreams of the great visionary Founder and the Crest of the Institution i.e. Kamadhenu resting under the Kalpataru with all the signia of royalty, has continued to fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of innumerable potential knowledge seekers. Such is its enormity and magnitude. I wish, hope and pray that the Strategic / Perspective Plan 2022-27 so released today may find its light in the years to come and may it take forward the institution towards greater heights of development”.

Calling upon the students he said “Life is like a running race tangled with stress and stiff competition. While leaping forward in this race, it is very necessary to cultivate patience and focus. This will enable to create a good ambience and a better society for all”.

Address by the Special Invitee

The Special Invitee Sri N. Shashi Kumar, the Commissioner of Police, Mangaluru City in his message said – “Successfully managing and running an institution for five decades and beyond is not a silly task. This institute has the legacy of having produced thousands of good citizens to this region and the nation at large in its transition of past 49 years and it continues to do so. In the Shikshana Kashi of Mangaluru, the Canara Educational Institutions stand tall as one among the prestigious institutions of the region. I wish and pray that may the Institution grow towards greater heights and greater glory in the years to come”. He called upon the students and said “Respect time and time will respect you. There is no shortcut to success. Hard work is the only key to success. The hard work put in never goes waste and will be timely and deservingly be rewarded”.
