Shark Tank Contest- An Event promoting Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Today, we are living in an age of entrepreneurship. Business that laid their foundation stone a few years ago are turning into unicorn. 2021 was a particularly game-changing year for India with over 40 start-up achieving unicorn status. Riding on this wave of entrepreneurship and keeping in mind our Honorable Prime Minister’s initiative ‘Start-up India’, “SHARK TANK CONTEST” – An Event to promote Innovation and Entrepreneurship was organized on Friday, March 11, 2022 in the College Seminar Hall.

Sri Pradeep G. Pai, Managing Director, Hangyo Ice Creams Private Limited, Mangaluru was the Chief Guest and Inaugurator. In his inaugural address he said – “Ideation can create anything. The entire world today is moving towards technology. One must make-up mind to explore and capitalize on the opportunities to pitch unique ideas resulting in either start-ups or employment. Today, companies function on disruptive business models. Hence, it is indispensable to think of a model, that is distinct, novel and one of its kind. Today, it is a world of brain and brand where physical net worth is losing its significance. Instead of migrating elsewhere, our efforts must be to transform Mangaluru as a hub of start-ups. Hard work, dedication and commitment with zeal and passion will certainly enable one to accomplish their dreams.”

Sri Basti Purushotham Shenoy, Governing Council Member, Canara High School Association, in his presidential address said – “Dream, believe and succeed in all that you do. An event of this sort is apt to ignite the spark of entrepreneurship among the students. Further, it will surely act as a jump-start for the participants’ journey ahead. Referring to the Chief Guest Sri Pradeep G. Pai he said – Mr. Pradeep G. Pai is a well-known figure in the market whose feet are firmly grounded and the Hangyo Brand has made its name nationally to reckon with amidst several ups and downs. Moreover, our Alumni who have made us proud are spread across the nation continue to be the source of inspiration for the generations.”

The event had witnessed the zealous participation of 09 teams comprising of three members each, pitching 09 novel ideas and sharing 09 different business opportunities to a panel of sharks. The novel ideas and business opportunities that were pitched included :
1. An application that will find a parking spot
2. A healer which will replace surgical cotton to 99%
3. A shoe that generates electricity
4. A service that enables artificial insemination and cross breeding for animals
5. Providing financial assistance for all financial problems
6. Fresh fish delivered at door step at an affordable cost
7. Recycling bin for making India sustainable
8. An app which helps train on and off the field in football
9. Bio-degradable pad with a cover for a safe disposal to maintain hygiene

The contest was formally judged by the panel of sharks – the Jury Members.

2. Mr. Abishek Shenoy
Intern at CS Ulhas S. Bhat, Mangaluru, and
Alumnus, Canara College, Mangaluru.

3. Mr. Bhadresh R. Mallya
Alumnus, Canara College, Mangaluru.

The IQAC and SQAC Coordinators Mrs. Dejamma A. welcomed and introduced the guest to the gathering. Student Conveners Mr. Neel J. Goradia gave insights and rationale of the Contest, Ms. Diksha Sharma proposed the vote of thanks. The Principal Dr. Premalatha V. and the IQAC and SQAC Coordinator Mr. Hardik P. Chauhan were present during the programme.

The event was culminated with the Valedictory programme at 2:15 PM in the Seminar Hall. Sri K. Shivananda Shenoy, Manager, Canara College, Mangaluru was the Chief Guest. In his valedictory address he congratulated all the participants for their zestful participation and lauded for the innovative business ideas. He also gave away the Certificates and Cash Prizes to the winners.

Student Convener of SQAC Ms. Arathi Goad welcomed the guest and gathering. Student Conveners Ms. Diksha Sharma presented the highlights of the Contest and Mr. Neel J. Goradia announced the winners. Student Ms. Padmashree compered the programme and Mr. Nishanth proposed the vote of thanks. The programme concluded with the singing of National Anthem.

In and all, the event certainly added value to the ideas of the participating teams, resulting in sharpening their business acumen. Thus, it endeavored to unleash the inner entrepreneur of the participants.

The event strived to achieve the core value of eliciting quest for excellence among the student participants.

Winners of the Contest:

First Place (Rs. 4,000/-) was bagged by Sumukh Acharya (III B.Com. B), Maithri P. S. (III B.Com. D) and Akshatha S. Karanth(I B.B.A.)

Second Place (Rs. 2,000/-) was bagged by Arathi Goad (III B.Com. D), Sai Sanketh (III B.Com. C) and Abhin Bangera (II B.Com. D)

Third Place (Rs. 1,000/-) was bagged by Sampreeth S. Shetty (III B.Com. C), Shravana (III B.Com. C) and Ben Benny Varghese (I B.B.A.)
