World Ocean Day – 2021

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth. The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. World Ocean Day reminds every one of the major role that oceans play in our everyday life. They are the lungs of our planet and a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere.

On this occasion of World Ocean Day, Science Association and Nature Club in association with Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement (OISCA), Mangaluru Chapter organized a Webinar on “Significance of Ocean Day – Need for Conservation of Marine Resources” on June 08, 2021 from 3.00pm to 4.00pm through Google Meet platform. The Resource person, Dr. V. N. Nayak, Retired Professor of Marine Biology, Karnataka University, Honarary Secretary, Uttara Kannada, Zilla Vijnana Kendra, Karwar,emphazised on the Significance of the day and the main threats caused to marine life due to human activity; and our individual responsibility and duty to use its resources sustainably. He also explained the reason for decline in the number of marine animals.

Mrs. Sushama C,Convener of Nature Club, delivered the welcome address and introduced the resource person to the gathering. Dr.Premalatha, Principal and Guest of Honour, enlightened the gathering on the importance of day and the need for conservation of Marine resources. Mrs. Dejamma, President, OISCA, Mangalore Chapter and H.O.D of Commerce Department, gave the presidential address. Mrs. Sukhalatha, Convener of Science Association, proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Madhushree, Convenor of Science Association, compered the programme. Dr. Amaranaryana and Dr. Nandakishore and other members of OISCA were also present during the programme. Altogether 40 students participated in the Webinar.
