Workshop on “Women Health and Hygiene”

Menstruation is a natural part of the reproductive cycle. However, in most parts of the world, it remains a taboo and is rarely talked about. Cultural practices and taboos around menstruation negatively impact the lives of women and girls, and reinforce gender inequities and exclusion. Moreover, studies have proved a direct link between poor menstrual hygiene and urinary or reproductive tract infections and other illnesses.

A workshop on the issue of menstrual hygiene and safe menstrual practice was organised by Centre for Women and Gender Studies in collaboration with Junior Chamber International, Mangaluru on March 8, 2017.

Around 142 students participated in this workshop. Dr. Ankeetha Menona J., Assistant Professor of K.S.Hegde Academy, Deralakatte, Mangaluru was the resource person. Discussions veered on orienting the students  on good menstrual hygienic practices such as use of sanitary napkins; washing and cleaning; how to dispose sanitary napkins, followed by precautions to be taken during the period and dietary habits, so, as to enable them to lead a healthy reproductive life in future.

During the programme, the JCI, Mangaluru felicitated Dr. K.V.Malini, Principal of the college. Prof. Seema Prabhu S., Director of CWGS introduced the guests and welcomed the gathering. Prof. Sushma R . Shetty,  Faculty of commerce, compeered the programme.  Mrs. Nuthan, Mr. Mahesh from JCI, Mangaluru present over the programme.
