A Workshop on Gender Awareness and Sensitivities

June 2, 2023

With the objective to promote and encourage gender equality the Cell for Women and Gender Studies of our College organized a workshop on “Gender Awareness and Sensitivities” for the UG students on June 02, 2023 at 2:30pm in our College Seminar Hall. The Resource Person for the workshop was Mrs. Preetham Kamath, Facilitator, Behavioural Trainer and Counselor, Mangaluru.

The objective of the workshop was to improve the mutual understanding of the boys and girls. While addressing the sensitive issue of sexual harassment at the workplace, the Resource Person made the students aware about the corporate laws in force that deal with exploitation at the workplace. She pointed out that one of the prime reasons for low participation of women in work force and dropping off after a certain level is the prevalent harassment at workplace.

Citing real examples, Mrs. Preetham Kamath, further, explained how strict the laws are against the offenders. If found guilty, legal action will be taken against the offenders, which includes penalty and even imprisonment. But, after inquiry if it’s found that the complaint was not in good faith but malicious one, then as per the provision in the law, the organization can take action against the complainant. She also focused on the employer’s liability in cases of sexual harassment at the workplace. Under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal Act organizations are liable to provide safe work environment for all individuals irrespective of their gender. She advised the youth to lead a morally upright life and treat girls and women with respect.

In the latter half of the programme, she conducted a few interesting skill based activities which improved the mutual understanding and facilitated the exchange of ideas between the boys and the girls. To sum up, 51 students benefitted from this hour-long enriching and fruitful workshop.

Ms. Bhargavi Nayak, Ms. Shravya Bhaktha and Ms. Vaishnavi Prabhu, students of II BCom A rendered the prayer. Ms. Vaishnavi welcomed the gathering, Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat, Co-convenor, CWGS introduced the Guest and Resource Person. Ms. Shravya Bhaktha proposed the vote of thanks.
