The 75th episode of the “Abbakka @ 500” lecture series was organized by IQAC and Department of Kannada, Canara College, in collaboration with the Karnataka State Mahavidyalaya Shikshaka Sangha (Registered), Mangalore, on September 17, 2025 at Smt. Ratna S. Shenoy Memorial Seminar Hall. Dr. Premalatha V., Principal of the College welcomed the guests and dignitaries.
Sri. Nalin Kumar Kateel, former Member of Parliament from Mangalore Lok Sabha Constituency, inaugurated the event. The Inaugurator praised Rani Abbakka’s bravery and patriotism, noting that she exemplified dedication to her country without seeking reservations. He also spoke about Rani Abbakka, describing her as the first woman freedom fighter who valiantly resisted the Portuguese. He emphasized that despite her remarkable courage, she has not received the recognition she truly deserves. In an era dominated by men, Abbakka’s leadership as a woman freedom fighter stands as a powerful example of women’s strength and determination.
CA M. Jagannath Kamath, Correspondent of the College, presided over the function and emphasized the significance of teaching national history to the students. He also stressed that the story of Rani Abbakka should be included in textbooks, so that students can learn about our rich traditions and the struggles of earlier generations. He also appreciated the AI-generated video on Abbakka and suggested that it be screened for all school children.
Dr. Kabbinale Balakrishna Bharadwaj presented a captivating Ashtavadhana performance based on Rani Abbakka’s life, showcasing his mastery over multiple poetic compositions. A documentary on Rani Abbakka’s life was screened during the event, further enriching the audience’s understanding of her legacy. Dr. Madhava M. K., Joint Secretary of Karnataka State Mahavidyalaya Shikshaka Sangha, Dr. C.V. Maridevara Mata, Organizational Secretary of the Sangha, Sri K. Shivananda Shenoy, Manager of the College, Sri. Naresh Shenoy, Member, Governing Council, CHS Association and Dr. Deepti Nayak, Administrative Officer were present. The event featured a range of dignitaries and scholars.
A total of 103 participants including 40 students and 63 faculty members participated in this programme.
