Eye Screening Camp

June 4, 2025

As a part of its commitment to community service and health awareness, the NSS Unit of Canara College organized an Eye Screening Camp on June 04, 2025. Under the supervision of the NSS Programme Officers Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat and Mrs. Sushama C, the camp was held at three different schools: Canara Higher Primary School (Urwa), Mangala English Medium High School (Gandhinagar), and Canara Kannada Lower Primary School (Dongerkery). This initiative was supported by Infosys Foundation in collaboration with LV Prasad Eye Hospital and made use of the AI-powered mobile application Sight Connect, which enabled 20 trained NSS volunteers to conduct preliminary eye tests.

Prior to the camp, NSS volunteers underwent a special training session on how to conduct basic eye screening using the Sight Connect app. The training focused on understanding the app interface, identifying common vision problems, and maintaining proper screening protocols with sensitivity and care.

On the day of the camp, teams of NSS volunteers were deployed to the three schools. The camp began at 9:30 AM and concluded at 12:30 PM. With the cooperation of school authorities and teachers, students were systematically screened in designated classrooms. Volunteers used the Sight Connect app to assess students’ vision. Cases that showed signs of potential vision impairment were noted for further referral to eye specialists.

The Eye Screening Camp was a successful blend of technology, service, and education. It not only helped detect early signs of vision impairment among school children but also empowered NSS volunteers with the skills and confidence to conduct similar health initiatives in the future. The NSS Unit of Canara College remains committed to continuing such impactful outreach activities for the betterment of society.
