Department of Kannada, Canara College organized “Basava Jayanthi Acharne”, a special talk on Basavanna on April 29, 2025, in the college seminar hall to commemorate Basava Jayanthi, a day that marks the birth anniversary of Jagadguru Basavanna, the great saint, poet, and social reformer of the 12th century, whose thoughts and ideals continue to inspire generations. Dr. Meenakshi Ramachandra, Retired Professor of Besant Women’s college, Mangaluru, was the Chief Guest of the programme.
Dr. Meenakshi remarked, “Basavanna was a revolutionary thinker endowed with immense intellect. He challenged social inequalities and ushered in a new wave in religious, social, and literary spheres. By using the language of the common people, he fostered a sense of unity beyond caste and creed. The Vachanas are the distilled essence of his life experiences. His powerful Vachanas, rich in wisdom and spiritual insight, remain a guiding light in our cultural and ethical landscape.”
The event was presided over by Dr. Premalatha V, the principal of the college. In her address she stated, “Long back Basavanna had envisioned a society rooted in equality, dignity, and devotion – one that transcended barriers of caste, class and gender.” She also enlightened the gathering about the timeless relevance of his values in today’s world.
The Head of the Kannada Department, Mrs. Vani U. S., welcomed the gathering. Student Greeshma proposed the vote of thanks, and Yuvaraj compered the event. Kannada Lecturer Mrs. Shailaja Pudukoli, 14 lecturers and 29 students were present. Student Sourabha and Srushti N. presented Basavanna’s vachana recitations. This activity strived to contribute to national development and inculcated a value system among students.
