On the occasion of International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) Day and in alignment with the governmental initiative “Swachhata Hi Seva”, 85 NSS volunteers of Canara College, on September 21, 2024, at 7:15 A.M. enthusiastically participated in the “International Coastal Cleanup Day 2024” at Panambur Beach and also in the Kite-flying competition organized by Indian Coast Guard, Panambur, Mangaluru. The primary objectives were to raise awareness about the sensitivity of ocean and coastal pollution, and promote sustainable practices.
Celebrated globally on the third Saturday of September every year, ICC Day serves to rid our planet of trash and promote a cleaner, healthier marine ecosystem. Cleaning up litter and mismanaged waste from our beaches, rivers, and waterways harnesses the power of people around the world to achieve incredible things by joining together. The theme for the International Coastal Cleanup Day 2024 is “#SeaTheChange”, highlighting the impact of every action taken to clean up our coastlines and the change we can create together.
At Panambur Beach, the volunteers collected large number of plastic waste and glass bottles, thus making the beach area clean and neat. The Cleanup Drive was held to protect our precious coastal ecosystems and to create a sense of responsibility and consciousness among the volunteers and public on appropriate disposal of waste and its effects on our ecosystem. It was followed by a kite-flying competition. The drive then concluded with nutritious and tasty refreshments.
Despite the rains, altogether 85 NSS volunteers actively participated in this drive. NSS Programme Officer Mrs. M. Keerthana Bhat and the NSS Assistant Programme Officer Mr. Shubham Kulal guided the volunteers.
