A two-day Wikipedia Workshop- ‘Wiki-Journey– Beginner’s Path to Wiki-proficiency’ in association with Karavali Wikimedian User Group and CIS/A2K, Bengaluru was conducted by the Department of Computer Science and Applications at Canara College on February 24 and 25, 2024 at Computer Laboratory. The workshop aimed to familiarize students with the significance and functions of Wikipedia, especially of Karavali Wikipedia; and how active participation can contribute to both personal and academic growth.
Sri. CA M. Jagannath Kamath, Correspondent, Canara College and inaugurator of the workshop extending his best wishes to the students urged them to seize the opportunity presented by Wikipedia and utilize it as a platform to shape their future.
The distinguished Chief Guest Dr. Kishore Kumar Rai Sheni, Treasurer of Karavali Wikimedians User Group highlighted that Wikipedia is not just a platform for information consumption but also a place for active contribution and knowledge sharing.
Dr. Deepti Nayak, Administrator, Canara College urged the students to make use of the opportunity and be titled as ‘Wikimedian’. Dr. Vishwanatha Badikana, President, Karavali Wikimedians User Group said it’s our prime duty to contribute to the growth of our regional language, to which every ones support is essential.
Mrs. Jayabharathi, K.P., the Head of the Department of Computer Science and Applications, captivated the audience by elaborating on how contributing to Wikipedia could be a gateway to name and fame for the students. She encouraged them to see this as an opportunity to not only gain recognition, but also contribute to society by sharing their knowledge. Her words resonated with the students, inspiring them to take a proactive stance towards their academic pursuits.
Principal Dr. Premalatha V Pai, in her presidential address, expressed her astonishment at learning that Wikipedia articles are contributed in Indian and local languages. She commended the initiative and encouraged the students to embrace their linguistic diversity and make a meaningful contribution to Wikipedia.
Mrs. Babitha Shetty, Staff Convenor of the workshop, while briefing the gathering, delivered an insightful presentation on the importance of Wikipedia. She emphasized how Wikipedia has revolutionized the way we access information and stressed its role in shaping a global knowledge repository.
The formal inauguration was followed by practical hands on experience to the participants. Sri. Bharathesh Alasandemajalu and Smt. Durga Prasanna were the resource persons for the two days’ workshop.
Mr. Vaishnu of I BCA compered the formal session, Ms. Ananya of I B.Sc welcomed the gathering and Ms. Meghana I B,Sc proposed the vote of thank.
In conclusion, the two-day Wikipedia workshop at Canara College was a resounding success. It not only provided valuable insights into the platform’s importance and functions but also served as a catalyst for the students to actively engage with knowledge sharing. With the enthusiastic support of the speakers and the college administration, it is anticipated that many students will embark on a journey of contribution and learning through Wikipedia.
20 students benefited from this workshop. Apart from Canara College students, 6 students from St.Aloysius College (Deemed to be University) Mangalore participated in this workshop. The two day workshop concluded on 25th February, 2024. Certificates were distributed to all the participants.
