Industrial Visit

An industrial visit was organized for 267 students of III B.Com. to Karkala on April 3 and 4, 2019 along with the faculties Mrs. Seema Prabhu S., Mrs. Sushma R. Shetty, Mrs. Smitha M., Mrs. Usha Nayak, Mrs. Ashalatha, Mrs. Vinoda V. Nayak and Mrs. Raksha R. Acharya, which provided an opportunity to educate the students regarding industrial environment.

Our first visit was to “Adarsh Industrial Chemicals”, a distillation plant, Sanoor which manufactures cashew nut shell liquid. The proprietor of the industry Sri N Ganesh Kamath explained the students about the different stages of process of cashew nut shell oil which were exported to foreign countries like Korea, Japan, Brazil, U.S.A, U.K, etc. He briefed that India being the largest exporter of cashew products over last one decade, contained various by products like cashew nut liquid, cashew shells, cashew cakes etc. Cashew shell containing 30% of the oil and angelic acid could be used to cure diseases like Aids and Cancer. The cost of that acid is Rs. 70 lakhs per kilo. Cashew test will be used for tanneries.

The second industry which we visited was Kamath Pova Mills, Modern Rice Mill Unit. The proprietor of the industry Sri Sadashiv Kamath explained different types of rice available and its byproducts. He also explained about processing and purification of paddy. Mr. Kamath highlighted about steaming, soaking, drying, bran removal and polishing.

The third factory which we visited was ‘Annapoorna Granite Cutting and Polishing Unit’ at Karkala. The main objective of this unit is manufacturing and processing of granite slabs for both domestic and export market. The proprietor Mr. Subhash Kamath explained to the students that Granite is an important structural and ornamental stone and because of its high compressive strength and durability, is extensively used for massive structural work like bridges, sea, river walls etc. It is available in different varieties and colour mostly in gray,red,pink,white etc. He also said that Granite is more durable as compared to marble and economical in maintenance. He explained about the manufacturing process for cutting and polishing of granite blocks. After the polish, slabs are marked to the required sizes and then slides are cut using edge cutting machines. He provided knowledge about the GST rates applicable to production.

Finally, we visited Soan’s Farm at Belvai, a centre of innovative agriculture. Major crops grown are Pineapple, arecanut, coconut and other variety of fruits. The owner provided information regarding multiple cropping of coconut, pepper etc. by which maximum usage of land can be done.

The industrial visit provided the students an exposure and an insight regarding internal working of factories. It helped the students to bridge gap between class room session and practical industrial world. All the students have been explained about manufacturing, management, HR, Sales Tax Department formalities and had interaction with the respective departmental heads which are useful for the students in their future.
